ProjectPsychosocial services for distressed displaced children in the Ludwigsfelde and Luckenwalde transitional accommodation centres
01.01.2025 – 31.12.2025
Our art therapy programmes, initiated in January 2019 at the transitional accommodation centre in Ludwigsfelde (Birkengrund), and in January 2024 at Luckenwalde (Anhaltstraße), provide comprehensive support to distressed displaced children of pre-school and primary school age and their families. Through art therapy group sessions and professional psychological guidance, our goal is to enhance the mental well-being of the children and their families.
Target group
The project targets all children in the accommodation centres the Birkengrund and in Luckenwalde who are in need of therapeutic, educational and psychological assistance. Psychological counselling is tailored to the needs of both children and their parents. Adult residents without children can also receive psychological support if needed.
Project goals and implementation
Our programmes are designed to foster potential and strengths, facilitate social participation and alleviate stressful conditions within the accommodation centres. Through the integration of various initiatives, we adopt a comprehensive approach with a weekly programme in the accommodation centres. This includes group sessions for both pre-school children and school children, as well as a parent-child programme for children with special needs. Additionally, a psychologist conducts weekly one-to-one outreach sessions and assists parents in managing challenges related to child-rearing and their own psychological well-being.
The art therapy sessions provide a space for creative dialogue, self-development and long-term support in coping with emotional distress. The parent-child groups specifically aim to strengthen the parent-child relationship. During these sessions, the psychologist addresses a range of topics, including parenting advice, child health, available support services , family dynamics and asylum and social law issues. Stressed parents also receive support through psychological diagnostics and referrals when necessary.
